Lose the Weight and Gain Self Esteem
When overweight, it can be very difficult to have good self esteem. It seems that as our body image suffers, so does our sense of self worth. Lap band surgery can not only assist in losing weight, but it can make drastic improvements to self esteem as well. Good self esteem is vital for a great quality of life, and the results of poor self esteem can have far reaching ramifications on a person’s personal and professional life.
Unfortunately, in our culture, high emphasis is placed upon physical appearance. Thin, shapely people are seen as more successful and desirable. Overweight people feel the pressure from this more acutely than anyone else, and its effects can be devastating. As a result, many overweight people suffer from low self esteem. The low self esteem has far reaching impact on the person’s life. Studies have shown that overweight people may be less likely to pursue hobbies, relationships and professional positions that are suitable to the level of the person’s ability. They tend to continuously sell themselves short, due to this undeserved negative light that they see themselves in.
Many times, people who struggle with their weight begin to feel powerless over the situation and out of control. They try diet after diet, but never achieve the long term results that they crave. This can lead to feelings of despair and defeat, and often the person can begin to focus and ruminate on their perceived shortcomings.
Lap band surgery helps these people by making weight loss a reality, not just a golden fantasy. As the pounds begin to come off, the person’s self esteem improves by leaps and bounds. Instead of feeling like a failure and out of control, they get real results that they can see and feel. As the person’s body image continues to improve, their self esteem continues to improve as well.
As a result of the improved body image and self esteem, people who have undergone lap band surgery also often regain a positive, healthy outlook on their lives. After years of not being able to do everything they crave, and worrying about their size, they finally begin to feel confident and able to follow their passions and pursuits.
